Schwarzburg Castle in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt

Schwarzburg Castle approx. 20 km (max. 27 min. by car) from Rudolstadt

It was once the ancestral seat, hunting lodge and summer residence of the Counts of Schwarzburg and one of the oldest and most powerful dynasties in Thuringia. The baroque castle complex is located on a narrow ridge in the Black Valley, surrounded by the wonderful nature of the Black Valley.

In 1595 and 1726, fires destroyed the castle. In 1726 the castle ruin was rebuilt as a hunting lodge. In 1744 this was essentially accomplished.

The former orangia with the Imperial Hall and the garden parterre in front of it is now used as a museum and called the “Gute Stube” of Schwarzburg Castle. The highlight of the two-storey garden or pleasure house is the Kaisersaal. Here the viewer stands in a breathtaking and unusual picture gallery. Although some of the 48 life-size depictions of the medieval emperors and kings are missing, the remaining ones, together with 100 imperial medallions and the wonderful stucco and painting programme, give a unique impression.

Years ago, the 5000 square metre garden in front of the Kaisersaal building was redesigned and now invites you to dream and linger.

For centuries the princely weapons collection was kept in the arsenal of Schwarzburg Castle. This has now been renovated and the weapons that were moved to Rudolstadt in 1940 can now be seen again at their historic location.
